If there is one booby trap the B-Grade movies need to look-out for, it is the desire to ape mainstream Bollywood movies. Unfortunately director Irfan decided to ignore the age old pitfall and tempted fate and the ire of the discerning B-Grade gentry. Needless to say that the outcome was a mind numbing one hundred and two minutes of attempted mainstream cock and ball torture.
After reviewing two stupendous movies my cynicism took a backseat and I was optimism personified when I chanced upon-- what seemed to be-- a potential slobber-knocker to the conviction that B-Grade movies were on the wane. It was not to be! Har Raat Naya Saudagar is everything that a B-Grade movie lover despises.
The story revolves around the chacha-bhatija pair of Mohan and Raj (The name Raj reeks of attempted mainstream recognition…whatever happened to Raaka, Shamsher etc.). Raj is a ladies’ man and cons whole lotta girls with his charisma only to trade them off to Champa Bai. So far so good. However the plot soon begins to tread down the beaten down path of sick father-young daughter, corrupt police officer, even more corrupt businessman with a fetish for virgins, local bhai with an intimidating persona clichés, not to mention the really gaudy sex scenes and some horrendous acting performances. Most notable amongst the culprits is Inspector More whose catchphrase goes something like this: “Mee inspector More hai “(notice the hai instead of Aahe). The same inspector speaks in Bhojpuri the next time he has been granted screen time. The screenplay is weak, to say the least, and the cinematography garish. Music lacks the panache normally associated with a B-ollywood movie and the Editing leaves a lot to be desired for.
Watch this movie if the other option is Kal Ho Na Ho or any of Karan Johar’s vaginal flicks.
