Issue #5: The Pseudo-Science Called Astrology

Horroscopes make no sense

Astrology is firmly rooted in the human psyche. Open the papers and you see entire sections and sometimes entire pages dedicated to this subject. It is disturbing to see that people not only read these things but they actually believe it and quote their horoscopes to explain themselves in certain situations. The astrologers are telling us what to do now! (Big Brother/Conspiracy theory, anyone!) Once I heard someone introducing herself to me with “Hi, I am so and so and I am very active and passionate about things since I am a “Fire” sign”. So what about those people, who are “Water” signs? Are they incapable of Passion? Does this mean you should never go to bed with any person who is a “Water” sign because the sex will be dull? Don’t you see the glaring holes in this pseudo-science already? Well, this is just the tip of the iceberg!

Astrology came to be in those dark ages when the ancients trying to find meaning to their lives started studying the skies so as to see what the Gods were cooking up for them. They studied the stars and planets and their motion around each other. Doing so, it seems they predicted the future. And now we are supposed to believe this bullshit from aeons ago when they hadn’t even perfected science and technology to the extent that the telescope wasn’t invented yet! Sorry state of affairs, isn’t it? Also check out the absurd claim that a planet’s motion in some sector of the universe is supposed to affect your life in some way. Like the planet is supposed to play second fiddle to someone who is smaller than a bacteria/atom whichever, compared to the majestic scale of the planet and the universe in general! How have we become so arrogant that we dare to malign the magnificence of the universe with such petty things like health, marriage, sexual problems  and which fucking house to buy and where?

Astrology assumes that the Earth is at the centre of the universe. That is such complete bull-crap. There is no finite limit to the universe; so any point in space and time can be considered to be the centre of the universe, even far off clouds of gas which are given alpha-numerical names like UI23365O! The astrologers also do not have single shred of evidence to support the notion of astrology predicting what will happen next in your life. They shy away from controlled double-blind tests which are conducted to prove/disprove it. This is so because the astrologers or rather the money spinners do not have faith in the subject they have dedicated their life to. Some have even gone and claimed that they do not know the exact working of astrology. So gullible are we that we still follow this shit after having ample proof that it doesn’t work. Critics may scoff that after they read their horoscopes, they actually experience whatever that is written. This is just a trick of the mind. Suppose you read that today in the evening you will have a romantic time (meant to culminate in sex). Well if you have a wife/ girlfriend or even a one night stand and you happen to get lucky, it doesn’t mean that it was actually predicted. You are bound to do it one time or another. (If you can’t do it at all, you have my sincere sympathy!) It doesn’t require rocket science to solve this you know. And you might misrepresent this fact saying that you read it in your horoscope and it actually happened. Ditto with predictions that you are a caring person, you will have relationship issues but they will be solved in a few days and all that crap which is just so random that when these aforementioned events happen you feel like the horoscope predicted so. Also, the logical fallacy of these readings, are that, they are not your personal readings. There are millions of people who share star signs. So is it possible that, say, every “Libran” will have relationship trouble or will be extremely happy at the same moment as you. Simply impossible and outrageous!

A test was actually conducted to check whether these predictions worked. Test subjects having varied star signs were given horoscopes which were said to be theirs but they were actually all Capricorn readings and no one knew that except the test organisers. Apparently all the test subjects said that the readings predicted the events in their life during those days. The only one to disagree was the lone Capricorn who had actually read her own Sign readings. Bizarre, don’t you think? This is because all the predictions are written in such a general way that everyone can identify with it. If you don’t believe me go to the papers and read the horoscope section except for the star sign to which you belong. You will see my point right away. I get peeved that newspapers which are supposed to be the heralds and guardians of the truth and the light (or so they claim to be! Carry on Dainik Jagran!) give so much importance to bullshit. I know many of us young people are sceptical of astrology but many people are still swayed by it. So please spread the word and shatter their delusions about this hocus-pocus crap before it come back to bite us in the arse.

The age of reason is upon us and let us be rational in all spheres of life rather than let an astrologer mould us into the beings that we think we are.

Glossary of Terms used:

1] An Astrologer - A person who cannot get an honest job anywhere else. (Blame the recession!)

2] A Horoscope reader - Stupid Git wasting his time when he can do something worthwhile like the crossword or Sudo-ku.

3] A horoscope believer - A person whose tenuous grip on reality is slipping by the moment. (Read stark raving mad SOB!)
