Kamal Rashid Khan, an entity so far unknown to the dynastic world of Bollywood bursts onto the scene with his controversial tour de force Desh Drohi. Much had been printed and said about the movie prior to its release; but in the very unique case of Desh Drohi it was just the storm before the storm. The movie is an epitome of perfection and the only reason why it failed to register a five star rating was because it did not include a scene depicting Harman Baweja being publicly flogged.
Raja Yadav (Kamal Rashid Khan) is a college student from the eccentric state of Uttar Pradesh who is tormented by his evil father and moves to Mumbai in order to escape his everyday taunts. While in Mumbai, he looks for his friend Shekhar/Kalia (Manoj Tiwari) who works as a watchman by day and sharpshooter by night. While on the lookout, Raja makes acquaintances with biker bhai Sonia (Gracy Singh), fruit vendor Abdul (Kadar Khan) and a whole lot of Maratha warriors hell bent on flattening his skull like the Wankhede pitch. Keeping them company is the chief minister, a corrupt cop, a fruity cop and an unscrupulous minister. Needless to say that Raja gives the coterie an ass whopping of their life.
Although the film focuses on the issue or regionalism, it also brings to light some of the malpractices of the migrating population from UP and Bihar. For instance, the first time Raja comes to Mumbai he boards a train from his native Gorakhpur without purchasing a legal ticket. The first time Raja boards a BEST bus he uses a 100 rupee note to buy a minimum fare ticket and rightfully gets thrown out of the moving bus. The film does not show any bias towards the average North Indian.
Desh Drohi is a must watch for every movie lover who values sensible cinematic experience or a 4 foot KRK wearing high heel shoes. It can also be used as a ‘what not to do when in Mumbai for the first time’ guide by the "evil” north Indian planning on surreptitiously “stealing” the jobs from the “deserving” local population.
