Issue #8: The Real Chosen Ones

In a world where recession has forced the prices of real estate to oscillate like two fat kids on the park see-saw it's only fair that we spare a glance at the condition of the most prized piece of real estate there is. And no ladies and gents we are not referring here to Cuffe Parade, Malabar Hill, Preet Vihar and the like. It is time for us to leave this materialistic world (only for a little while, we know you wanna be back in time for your favorite TV show) and turn our gaze to the spiritual realm. Today we measure the cost of life in heaven.

Now it’s commonly believed that entry into heaven -- obviously to be having this discussion we're assuming that heaven and hell are real places and not just the figments of a bunch of ancient demented imaginations -- is based on the good deeds committed by a person. By that reckoning alone one can't visualize long queues and MHADA-esque lotteries to allocate houses to the deserving. So does that mean that there is space in heaven for those who have it in them to be righteous and true and good and just and all that...?? Maybe not.

atheist heaven non believers real estate the final land

To understand this one must first accept the premise that every religion in the world says that only ‘It’ offers the right path and only by following ‘It’ can you finally earn atonement for your 'sins'. And if those exact statements were not part of the original religious scriptures then scriptures be damned, that’s exactly what was preached by the religious leaders. How can you prosper if your religion doesn't spread and how can it spread if it doesn't offer something that truly defies logic - such as eternal salvation. How can a religion be lucrative if all you offer is peace of mind and the chance to be a better human being?

So now we're faced with a quandary. Every religion preaches deliverance through its means and eternal hellfire through the teachings of another. And as all human beings are created equal so the values that they hold dear -- in this case their religious beliefs -- are also equal. So it is not possible to avow one religion as the true religion and be damned with the rest of them. So therefore any man who practices any given religion (or two or three...doesn't matter now) on God's good earth has thereby doomed himself to burn in hell for the rest of afterlife.

So the way is paved for the ultimate prize -- “a heavenly abode” -- to be inherited by that despicable, reprehensible character -- “The Atheist", the non-believer, that disenchanted wretch who walks this earth doomed forever for his sacrilegious attitudes. And this must be appreciated as irony in its truest sense as the atheist (who was never perceived as the one who would go to heaven), never wanted to go there in the first place hence chose not to believe in it. But as in all matters religious (whether you believe in it or not)  as you’re deprived of your own free will the atheist will go to the land where harps play and where old people dressed in white sit on golden benches and feed pigeons.

So if you get to heaven you'll be pleasantly surprised to see it free of clutter and people that you couldn't stand on earth. Instead you'll find it inhabited by nice practical minded people who thought it proper to  fight over their favorite football team but never understood the need for lynching a guy who preached being nice to people for a change. And although it won't be too crowded you'll always have company both pleasant and plentiful because no matter what that child-molesting holy man preaches, there will always be one of those non-believer 'bastards' around.
